Most commonly kept species is the African Pygmy Hedgehog (a hybrid of two wild species). They are nocturnal insectivores known for their quills and "anointing" behavior (foaming and spreading saliva).

  • Temperament: Solitary and naturally shy and wary. They are not usually "cuddly" but can be tamed with patience and consistent gentle handling. They are nocturnal and can be noisy at night. Housing: Requires an enclosure of at least 24′′×24′′ and an exercise wheel (solid surface, no wire rungs) since they travel miles in the wild. Health/Safety: Can carry Salmonella, requiring rigorous hand washing after handling. Legal to own in most places, but banned in some states/cities. Diet: Commercial hedgehog kibble supplemented with insects (mealworms, crickets) and fresh produce.
