Developed in Germany from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser, a dog used for bear-baiting. Later refined for use as police/military dogs and as companions.

Playful, energetic, and patient. Known for their "puppy-like" nature that lasts into adulthood. They are loving family dogs but are naturally watchful. Need significant daily exercise and do not tolerate heat well (brachycephalic). Can be droolers and are sensitive to harsh correction.
